Hello and Welcome!
As some of you may have seen if you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, last week I received my first ever Influenster VoxBox and I was EXCITED to say the least! This morning I posted a selfie on Instagram where I said that I would be reviewing my VoxBox contents today.
For anyone who doesn’t know what Influenster is, how it works, what a VoxBox is, or how to get one, I’ll give you a quick rundown (for anyone who does know, feel free to skip to the review)!
Influenster is a website where you can review products, ask questions, create lists, post photos, read blog posts, and interact with a whole range of individuals. When you sign up, you need to complete your profile, upload a photo, and connect your socials (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Blog, YouTube, any other social profile you have) and it will total up all of your followers to create an overall ‘Impact Score’. You will receive ‘snaps’ on your profile from time to time which will ask you questions (such as which brands of mascara have you bought), and gives you the opportunity to review the products that you’ve tried. After you’ve completed a certain number of ‘snaps’ and reviews in different areas, you will receive a ‘badge’ for that area (for example ‘Beauty Junkie’ or ‘Reviewer’). Doing the ‘snaps’ available to you, completing your profile entirely, and connecting all of your socials is very important in order for you to be considered for a VoxBox.
A VoxBox is a box that contains complimentary products that is delivered to your house. These boxes can contain multiple products, or just one, and can be full of all the same brand, or can be themed (for example I’ve seen themed lifestyle boxes that contain a range of brands). If Influenster deems you appropriate for one of these boxes, you will receive a pre-survey which will ask more questions about you in order to decide whether you’re a match for what they’re looking for (you won’t know what the box is at this point). If they decide that you would be a good fit based on your answers, you will then receive an email telling you that you’re in, and detailing the name of the campaign. At this point, the VoxBox will be shipped to you, and you will notice a campaign on your profile for the VoxBox. You will need to check the box in, then will see a number of tasks for you to complete in the campaign section (like reviewing the product(s), and sharing photos) in order for you to gain a badge. For my VoxBox, if you complete all of the tasks then you have the opportunity to win more items from Marc Jacobs. However, it’s important to complete all of these regardless if you want to be considered for a VoxBox in the future.
Okay, so that’s it for the explanation! I’m really new to Influenster, and this is the first VoxBox I’ve ever received (I totally wasn’t squeeling when I got the email), so I wanted to share everything I know to hopefully help you out if you’re new to Influenster too or if you join! I didn’t have anyone helping me to understand it, so I was confused about the whole thing for quite a while. All the information above is a combination of Googling, looking on various different pages on Influenster, and my personal experience. If you have any questions about Influenster or the VoxBox process then leave a comment or email me at email@example.com and I’ll answer as best as I can.
I think that’s quite enough rambling, so let’s get into what I received and what I will be reviewing today!
- Marc Jacobs ‘Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara’ – £22.00
I’ve included the price there as I don’t like reading reviews on a product where I can’t see how much it cost! However, it’s important to note that I received this product complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes therefore I did not pay for it.
As shown in the above photos, the mascara comes in a sleek black box with white lettering. The brand name is clearly printed with the product name smaller below. The tube itself is hexagonal and has the same ‘Marc Jacobs’ lettering on one side. The brand name is printed on the tube, rather than etched in, however seems to have a clear coating over it, so I’m confident that it won’t wear away over time.
I personally am a sucker for packaging and this screams luxury at me. The outer box is sleek and glossy but the cardboard itself is thick. The tube feels heavy and is also super glossy. The hexagonal shaping of the tube makes it easy to grip (who else sometimes struggles when mascara tubes are smooth cylinders) and the cap is big enough so it’s easy to hold onto and it fits into your hand nicely. I find the hexagonal shape of the cap also makes it really easy to hold, as your fingers can sit on different sides of the cap.
For the price point, this is the quality I was expecting in the packaging, and whilst the product is ultimately the most important thing, the packaging is your first impression and is still super important.
As with any review, I think that it’s important to show the claims of this product (prepare yourself because they’re very big claims):
‘Instant Volume, Epic Lashes. Experience 1800% more volume and the look of false lashes with Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara. The lash-maximising, curvy brush places the most volume at the hard-to-reach centre lash line, and the defining tip styles lashes for major drama. The ultra-concentrated black pigment delivers the greatest visual impact, and the Flash Volume Complex(TM) creates instant, smudge-free length and volume in three strokes or less.’
These claims are taken from the John Lewis website, you can view them here.
Application and Final Look
The wand on this mascara is not unusual for volumising mascaras, and is hourglass shaped. I do really like this mascara wand, I always find that I get the best results with wands of this shape and I’ve found it really soft (nothing worse than a wand that you end up hurting your eye with).
Honestly, I am really impressed with the results that this mascara has given me. It’s really rich in pigment and comes off very black. I find the formula really comfortable, I don’t think that it feels like I’m wearing mascara when I use this product. I like the way that it separates and volumises my lashes, and when I’ve looked in the mirror after a full day of wearing it, not only does it look exactly as it did when I first applied it, but I’ve had to think about whether I was wearing wispy false lashes or not. The formula doesn’t crumble, flake off, or smudge, and is really lightweight and I definitely think that the ‘velvet’ part of the name is exactly how I would describe this product – it’s very soft and velvety feeling on the eye.
Despite this, the product is not perfect and I think that it certainly takes some getting used to. As the formula is so light in texture, I find that the brush picks up a lot of product and applies too much to the lashes. As it doesn’t really feel like I’m applying anything to my lashes, I have gone overboard a few times. If you do apply too much, the product does get slightly clumpy and I have had to go in with a mascara with a thinner brush to help separate my lashes. The shape of the brush, whilst it makes it easy to coat all lashes, can apply too much product to just the center lashes sometimes. However, I have found that if I lightly scrape some of the product off of the brush on the opening to the tube, then it applies much better.
Overall, I am a really big fan of this mascara and I am so grateful that Influenster sent the product over to me as I probably wouldn’t have found it on my own. I’ve only ever had one mascara that is a similar price, which was the YSL ‘Babydoll’ Mascara, so I’m not accustomed to using luxe mascaras. Whilst the price tag is quite expensive (in my opinion) I would say that if you’re looking for a mascara which will give you huge volume, and feel really lightweight, and you either have the money or are currently saving to buy a luxury mascara then this product would be a great one to choose! I personally haven’t tried a mascara that has felt as nice as this one, and given me this big of an effect, and am very surprised and delighted.
If you would like to purchase this Marc Jacobs ‘Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara’ or find out more then you can do so on the John Lewis website here.
