Fenty Beauty ‘Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo’ Review

Hello and Welcome!

I hope everyone is having a fantastic, and relaxing, Sunday! Today’s post is another on Fenty Beauty, but this time I’m reviewing one of her highlighters (because you know I love a good highlighter).

Overall I’m pretty impressed with Rihanna’s launch, and I admire the fact she launched so many products straight away, and the huge selection of foundations that were available. The initial launch included a range of foundations, a primer, a lip gloss, a huge amount of highlighters (both cream and powder), contours, a blotting powder, brushes, a makeup sponge, and on the go blotting papers.

As someone who loves highlighters, I absolutely had to get a highlighter from the range and was really impressed by how many highlighters were available in the range. Out of all of the choices, I managed to narrow it down to just one:

  • Fenty Beauty ‘Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo’ in the shade ‘Lightning Dust/Fire Crystal’ – £26

As I had no reviews to base my purchase off of, I was debating between this split pan product, and the single pan highlighter in ‘Metal Moon’ (which looked to be a pure white colour online). I ended up getting this one purely because it contained two colours for the same price, and I thought that I had two shots at liking the product. Also I have found that super white highlighters look a bit off when I apply them.

I actually spoiled the surprise for myself and saw the packaging online before it arrived (I couldn’t help myself) and I absolutely loved it. I really wasn’t sure what to expect from the packaging but I could not be more impressed.

As I said in my Fenty Beauty ‘Lip Bomb’ Review, the packaging makes me think of graffiti and reminds me of the Urban Decay Basquiat collection. I really love the contrast between the black and grey graffiti packaging and the slick white case of the highlighter. The actual box is matte but the centre sticker with the brand name on is a shiny white. One thing I also love about this is that the packaging is almost an inverse of the ‘Lip Bomb’ packaging, which was mostly white/cream with a shiny black label.

In terms of the actual highlighter case, I really love that too. I like that it’s hexagonal, I don’t own any other products that are in this shape. Additionally, I really love the white of the packaging, it makes it look expensive and sleek. As it isn’t a matte case I don’t think it will get dirty as you can wipe away any product that gets on the compact, which is a plus. In comparison to the ‘Lip Bomb’ packaging, I think that this feels a lot more expensive.

Product Description

Whilst I’m a bit of a packaging fiend and honestly could talk all about the colour, and feel, of the packaging, you most probably aren’t reading this review to hear all about the packaging so let’s jump into how the product is described.

On the Harvey Nichols website under ‘The Breakdown’ section, the ‘Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo‘ is described with the following passage:

‘Light up where you want, when you want. Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter was born to reflect your every mood with its line-up of luminising solos and duos. With a dose of skin-glorifying colour, Killawatt ranges from subtle day glow to insanely supercharged, with shades that were designed for all skin tones. Unlike your everyday highlighter, Killawatt keeps skin lit beyond sundown with its weightless long-wear formula – a cream-powder hybrid that instantly melts into skin and blends with almost zero effort. Another win, it’s loaded with superfine shimmer for an ultra smooth, creamy texture. For killer radiance, Killawatt’s your go-to for highlighting your face, eyes, lips, collarbone… literally anywhere you crave a touch of light.’

Application, Formula, and Review

I think these swatches might be quite hard to see, as they are only just darker than my skin tone and both are quite similar colours.

I found these very soft to the touch, they absolutely aren’t grainy or chunky at all. I found that applying them as a finger swatch they were both very smooth and certainly softer than I expected them to be, with ‘Lightning Dust’ being slightly softer than ‘Fire Crystal’. One thing that I love with these is how so amazingly pigmented that they are, you only need the smallest amount of product to get a large pigment payoff, which makes it really easy to apply and I imagine that it would last a long time. Furthermore, I find the product really easy to blend to create a flawless application.

Both of these are quite similar colours, they both look pink toned in the pan, but when applied with a finger swatch they come off more on the golden side. Applied with a brush to my cheekbone I found that they are both super pretty colours and both of them are perfect for my skin tone. If I’m totally honest I don’t think these show much of a colour when applied to the face with a brush, but if I absolutely had to describe the colour I would say that it is a very faint pink tone. Whilst with some highlighters you can clearly see that they are coloured, this one just looks like a really beautiful icy glow, but I wouldn’t say that it adds a lot of colour. I personally don’t mind this as it means that I get a really amazing glow without looking like a have colour on my cheekbone.

I would say that out of the two ‘Lightning Dust’ is a more of a natural highlighter, whilst ‘Fire Crystal’ comes off as much more blinding. On the Harvey Nichols website ‘Lightning Dust’ is described as a ‘Soft Pearlescent Sheen’ whilst ‘Fire Crystal’ is a ‘Supercharged Pearlescent Shimmer’. I definitely would describe them in this way, ‘Fire Crystal’ is seriously blinding and beautiful, and I think the description ‘supercharged’ is correct. I have been using this highlighter duo ever since I received it and have been loving it. Typically I do tend to use ‘Fire Crystal’ as I prefer my highlighter to be blinding, but on days where I want more natural makeup I use ‘Lightning Dust’.

Overall, I really love this product and I think that it coming in a split pan with one more natural highlight, and one blinding highlight, was a fantastic idea and works fantastically for me. I think the price point is okay, I perhaps would have preferred it to be cheaper and was apprehensive about buying it when I saw the price, but after trying the product I think the price is fantastic for the quality of the highlighters. I would definitely recommend this and I think that it would be good for everyone, whether you like a blinding highlighter, or a natural one, or perhaps a bit of both (like me). Additionally, this highlighter duo comes in three other shades meaning that there should (hopefully) be one to suit everyone’s skin tone. I will definitely be continuing to use this, and it has rapidly become my favourite highlighter. One thing I am interested in is trying the curved highlighter brush that came out with the Fenty Beauty launch, to see if that makes any difference to the way that the product applies.

If you would like to purchase this then you can do so on the Harvey Nichols website here or from Sephora.
