Hello and Welcome!
I think I can honestly say that I have never been as excited for a beauty brand as I was for the Fenty Beauty by Rihanna launch. I was so excited that I got up at 7:45am to ensure I could purchase the products from Harvey Nichols when they launched at 8:00am.
Although I don’t personally wear foundation, the fact that Rihanna launched FORTY shades straight off the bat is incredible and I think the shade range is amazing. I hope that this shows brands that they should be catering to all skin tones and skin types.
Alongside the foundation launch, she also launched a primer, a lip gloss, a whole array of highlighters (including both powders and creams), contour sticks, concealer sticks, blotting powder, brushes, a makeup sponge, and blotting papers for on the go. As a first launch, the amount of products was amazing (there were 91 in total, including the 40 foundations) and I can’t wait for her to launch more!
With no reviews to go off of, I purchased what appealed most to me (and what I could comfortably buy on my credit card). As a lover of highlighter, I of course had to buy one, and a review will be coming later this week on that, but for today we will focus on my second purchase from the Fenty Beauty line:
- Fenty Beauty ‘Gloss Bomb’ ‘Universal Lip Luminizer’ – £16.00
If I’m totally honest I was disappointed that there was only one lip product, and no eye products, I definitely wanted to see some lipsticks, although I’m sure that some will come in the future. However, there only being one lip product, and only one shade was also a blessing for me as I’ve been wanting to get into lip glosses more but don’t know where to start or what kind of shades to choose. When I initially saw the photos of the launch I knew this would be the product I would be buying.
I think it’s only fair to start this review by talking about the packaging before getting into the description of the product itself.
I absolutely love the box that this comes in. I’m the type of person who hoards nice packaging and this is something that I will definitely be keeping. The box is matte white with pink, and has a black pattern on the top. The first thing I thought of when I saw this packaging was graffiti, it reminds me of the Urban Decay Basquiat collection, and I really love it. The black section in the centre with the brand name on is glossy and contrasts nicely with the matte box. Overall, I absolutely love the exterior packaging of the product.
If I’m totally honest, I’m not hugely fond of the actual ‘Gloss Bomb’ tube. As nice as metallic caps look, I find that they attract finger prints and dirt and end up looking messy (and they’re a pain to photograph). I found that the cap itself felt quite thin and lightweight, I personally was expecting it to feel a little more luxurious for the price point. However, I do like the rest of the tube, and the way that the brand name is printed on the side of the bottle in the same metallic silver to match with the cap.
Whilst I could sit and talk about packaging for about 20 years, the actual important part is of course the product, so let’s take a look at how the product is described and its claims.
On the Harvey Nichols website under ‘The Breakdown’ section, the ‘Gloss Bomb’ is described with the following passage:
‘THE stop-everything, give-it-to-me gloss that feels as good as it looks: Gloss Bomb delivers explosive shine in one perfect rose nude shade handpicked by Rihanna herself, FENTY Glow. We’re talking the unicorn of nudes that looks good on everyone. One luscious swipe of Gloss Bomb’s XXL wand gives lips more to love, while conditioning Shea butter enriches from within. Lips look instantly fuller and smoother, and though it’s super shiny, it’s not the least bit sticky, with an addictive peach-vanilla scent you just can’t get enough of. Drench lips in the FENTY Glow – it’s the ultimate finishing touch to every look.’
Application, Formula, and Review
I definitely found the application very easy, the wand is much bigger than the traditional gloss applicator, and is bigger than the wands on all of my liquid lipsticks. I only needed one dip into the bottle to cover my lips which means this product will last a long time. Whilst I really like the colour, I do find it difficult to describe. In the tube it does look like a rose nude, but when swatched on my arm it looks more like an orange toned nude. When applied to my lips it does come off darker than my natural lip colour, but when looking at photos side by side (the first photo is no lip products, the second is with the Fenty Beauty ‘Gloss Bomb’), it doesn’t seem like it’s added much colour. Instead I think that it somehow makes the colour of my lips more even and pretty.
I would say that the formula looked to be on the thicker side, when I first pulled the applicator out of the bottle it looked a bit gloopy and I was super worried. However, when applied it feels a lot more like a balm, than a sticky lip gloss, when you press your lips together – I’ve literally worn liquid lipsticks that are stickier than this product. I honestly haven’t ever had a lip gloss that’s felt like this. Typically the glosses that I’ve tried have been really sticky and stringy (you know, the type of gloss where when you press your lips together and you get those nasty sticky strings between your lips) but this is absolutely not like that. I tend to have an issue with lip glosses where they really irritate me, and after about 10 minutes I want to take them off, but this so far is the most comfortable lip gloss I’ve ever worn. Whilst you can feel it on your mouth it’s not really heavy, or thick, and I think it feels a lot like a thick balm.
Another thing I really love is the smell! The Harvey Nichols description states that it is a ‘peach-vanilla’ scent but I’ve heard people describe it as anything from sweets to watermelon and weirdly I can understand how people could smell either. It does have a sweet smell, and I would say that it could be ‘peach-vanilla’ as described, but weirdly when first applying it, I do get a little bit of a watermelon scent. Personally, whilst I do like the smell, I do think that it could potentially be too much. This isn’t the type of scented product where it loses its smell once it’s on your lips, this ‘Gloss Bomb’ maintains its scent and you can definitely smell it the whole time you’re wearing it. I would say that I am someone who is sensitive to scents, as I suffer from migraines strong scents can cause them, and I do think that this could do that if I wear it for too long. As the product wears off, however, as does the scent, so potentially if you wore less, the scent wouldn’t be as strong.
I haven’t tried wearing this over a matte lipstick yet because I’m unsure whether I would reach for this to go over a lipstick. Personally when I choose to wear lipstick I always wear a matte lip and typically it is because I want a matte lip. It isn’t often that I really want to have a glossy lip. However, this desire may increase as I now own a gloss that I like wearing.
Overall, I think that I will reach for this gloss very often. Weirdly I like that it comes in one shade, I’m very bad at choosing and I like that Rihanna put thought and effort into creating a product that suits all skin tones. I have seen reviews from people with many different skin tones using it and from what I’ve seen it does actually seem to be the universally flattering shade that it claims it is. I have been searching for a while for a lip product that is easy to put on and use on a day where I want to wear minimal makeup but still look good, and I think that I’ve finally found it. I think this gloss is fantastic at elevating my natural lip colour and adding a little something extra. Usually I am quite harsh about prices as I never have much money, but I think that £16 for a flattering gloss that can be worn alone by anyone, or layered over a lipstick of your choice, is a pretty good deal. Of course this is just my personal opinion, but I definitely would recommend the Fenty Beauty ‘Gloss Bomb’ if you’re looking for a gloss that isn’t going to be gross and sticky, smells good, and makes your lips look super even and glossy.
If you would like to purchase this then you can do so on the Harvey Nichols website here or from Sephora.
