Hello and Welcome!
As someone who watches beauty YouTube videos multiple times a day, I can’t count the amount of times that I’ve seen YouTubers review the L’Oreal Paris ‘Paradise’ mascara (named ‘Lash Paradise’ in the USA) in comparison to the Too Faced ‘Better Than Sex’ mascara. This mascara has taken a while to be launched in the UK, so when I saw it in Boots a few weeks ago I wanted to get it myself to test against the aforementioned Too Faced ‘Better Than Sex’ mascara.
The two products do have quite different price points:
- Too Faced ‘Better Than Sex’ Mascara – £19.00
- L’Oreal Paris ‘Paradise’ Mascara – £11.99
To be honest when I’ve heard people speak about this mascara as a drugstore dupe for the ‘Better Than Sex’ mascara, I thought it would be cheaper and I do think that £11.99 is on the pricey side for drugstore mascaras. For example, another popular new mascara from L’Oreal Paris, the ‘Miss Baby Roll’ mascara is £4 cheaper at £7.99.
I will touch on the price differences later in the review, so let’s jump straight in!
As you can see from the pictures above, the bottles of each mascara are very different. Firstly, they’re a different colour, with the L’Oreal ‘Paradise’ mascara being more of a copper colour with a metallic, reflective, cap, with the product name printed on, whilst the Too Faced ‘Better Than Sex’ mascara comes in pink packaging, with the product name in raised text. However, I think the main difference for me (apart from the colour) was the quality of the tubes. The Too Faced bottle is heavy and made of metal (it’s normally cold to the touch when I get it out of my drawer), whereas the L’Oreal one is made of plastic and is very cheap and light in comparison.
Personally, I much prefer the packaging of the Too Faced mascara as it is heavier and feels more luxurious. I enjoy that it is all one colour, and that the text protrudes from the bottle. I just don’t like how light and plastic feeling the L’Oreal Paris mascara is.
The wands on these mascaras are pretty similar, as you can see in the pictures. They are both hourglass shaped and have similar bristles. However, the wand on the Too Faced mascara (the left in the final photo) is slightly bigger and I think the top is thicker whereas it’s the bottom of the L’Oreal wand that is larger. To be honest though, they are very, very similar.
To fully understand the product we need to take a look at what each brand claims the product will do.
The description of the Too Faced ‘Better Than Sex’ mascara from their website is as follows:
‘Created during a holy grail quest to find a truly buildable mascara, Better Than Sex provides extreme volume and a more dramatic look with each coat. One coat of the carbon black, collagen-fueled formula and lashes are full, defined and stretched to unbelievable lengths. Two coats and lashes are even more luscious, curled, and dramatic. Three coats and achieve the most intense black, oversized, multidimensional lashes possible! The Hourglass-Shaped brush unlocks the formula to create the perfect mascara that volumizes, lifts and coats both tops and bottoms of every little lash—with no lash left behind. A mascara so amazing…it’s Better Than Sex!’
In comparison, the L’Oreal Paris ‘Paradise’ description taken from their website reads:
‘Take your lashes to paradise with intense volume and spectacular length. The Ultra-Soft brush coats lashes with a silky smooth formula, enriched with lash-loving castor oil. Lashes feel feather-soft, without any flaking.’
If I’m honest I personally don’t really see many comparisons between the Too Faced claims and the L’Oreal Paris claims, apart from each mascara claiming to give volume and length.
Ease of Application and Final Look
As you can see from the above photos (you may want to click to enlarge them), I did try to include photos that show the similarities and differences between the two mascaras. The first eye image shows the Too Faced ‘Better Than Sex’ mascara, and the second demonstrates the applied L’Oreal Paris ‘Paradise’ mascara.
I personally can notice a difference. I found that the Too Faced mascara much quicker and easier to build and didn’t take as many layers; also I think the overall separated look of my lashes is nicer than how the L’Oreal side looked. Furthermore, although I applied the ‘Paradise’ mascara to my eye that has nicer more curled lashes (please tell me I’m not the only one with a ‘better’ eye), I found that it was difficult to get my lashes separated and it was quite clumpy on the bottom lashes, especially in the outer corner of my eye. Therefore the eye with ‘worse’ lashes, where I applied the Too Faced mascara, came out looking better. That being said, I did find that the L’Oreal ‘Paradise’ mascara came out darker and definitely had more pigmentation in comparison to the Too Faced one. I personally do like my mascaras to be as dark as possible so I prefer the colour of the L’Oreal Paris one.
Overall, in terms of the final look I do think that there is a noticeable difference in the photos of the applied product. Although it is quite subtle I asked my boyfriend and he said he could notice that I was wearing two different mascaras (although I think this was because the L’Oreal one is darker than the Too Faced one). That being said, if the L’Oreal ‘Paradise’ mascara was less clumpy, I really don’t think there would be much of a difference at all.
Price vs Results – Is the L’Oreal ‘Paradise’ a Dupe?
Here’s a quick price breakdown of the mascaras:
- Too Faced ‘Better Than Sex’ Mascara 8ml for £19.00 = Roughly £2.38 for 1ml
- L’Oreal Paris ‘Paradise’ Mascara 6.4ml for £11.99 = Roughly £1.87 for 1ml
As you can see, the L’Oreal Paris mascara is cheaper overall than the Too Faced mascara, and it works out at around 50p cheaper per ml which is quite substantial.
Personally, I find the results of the L’Oreal mascara ARE similar to the Too Faced mascara, however I don’t think that the mascara is as incredible as American YouTubers made out. I think both mascaras have their benefits, but also have their own drawbacks. I do find that the L’Oreal ‘Paradise’ mascara is more clumpy and difficult to work with than the Too Faced ‘Better Than Sex’ mascara, however I find that the Too Faced mascara dries out quickly (and is £7 more expensive). That being said, I also much prefer the packaging and feel of the Too Faced mascara over the L’Oreal one, so I’m quite torn about which one I would prefer to buy just on product merit.
Overall I do like both of these mascaras and recommend both of them. If I absolutely had to choose out of them SOLELY on the product and price, I think I would lean more towards the L’Oreal mascara, as a £7 saving is quite substantial for a similar product. However, and I know this opinion may be controversial to some, after L’Oreal Paris’ recent behaviour and attitude regarding Munroe, I would prefer to buy the Too Faced mascara and will not look towards buying from L’Oreal Paris in the future (especially as this is the only L’Oreal product I own, so clearly am not drawn to them). This is just my personal view and opinion, it’s up to you whether you would like to continue buying from L’Oreal Paris, and my review has not been affected by the fact I will no longer purchase from them.
So this brings us to the end of this battle and I definitely found that these products were quite fairly matched, both are quite hyped on social media and YouTube, with different pros and cons. I would really love to hear your thoughts on these mascaras, especially if you’ve tried both, so please leave a comment!
